The Interpretation Center for the Maritime History of Milna, located in the center of the settlement of Milna, on the island of Brač, reveals the long and rich maritime and fishing tradition of this part of Brač, but also of the island as a whole. The theme of maritime heritage is viewed through three dominant aspects: fishing, seafaring and traditional shipbuilding. The permanent exhibition, with the active participation of the local community, will be a space for preserving and presenting its memory and identity, based on maritime heritage. The exhibition part of the center will feature panels with a historical overview of the development of shipbuilding in Milna, as well as a display of the components of a ship. The central part will house the collected materials and various useful documents, objects, equipment from ships, tools, records, books, photographs, depending on the available materials that will be determined in the later stages of equipping and putting the center into operation.
The center will be intended for everyone, adults, children, local residents and visitors to the municipality of Milna and the island of Brač. Due to its position in the very center of the settlement, it will be a starting point for understanding the rich maritime heritage of this region, and by putting the center into operation, the strategic goal of the local development strategy is achieved - participatory and comprehensive development of the local community through the valorization and sustainable use of the overall resource base.

Project justification
In the protected cultural and historical complex of Milna (marked as land registry number 2206 VRT, area 345 m2, registered in the land registry office no. 1660, cadastral municipality Milna, at the Land Registry Office Supetar, Municipal Court in Split), the development and adaptation of the space for the construction of the interpretation center of the maritime history of Milna is planned. The center will be located in an exceptionally valuable location, on the edge and immediately adjacent to the historic core, from where the development of the coastal settlement began in the early 16th century. This is the area of the conservation-protected zone "A" in the immediate vicinity of the "Conteta Riva", next to two exceptionally valuable representative architectural complexes frontally facing the sea in the spirit of the coastal urban concept of the town. These are the "Sargot's Steps" from the first quarter of the 20th century, which have direct and original access to the area of land registry office no. 2206 intended for the interpretation center of the maritime history, and the Renaissance castle of the noble Cerineo family known as "Polaca", which is located high behind the loggia, at the top of the steps.
The multifunctional interpretation center (as an indoor space for dialogue, presentations, education, animation) and the associated outdoor, enclosed space (for stage and musical performances and ambient entertainment), as well as the "Sargot's Stairs" and the "Cemetery" (as an outdoor "hall space"), are complementary and functionally complementary units. Namely, in the summer they take on the role of a stage space as a stage in situ which would make the vicinity of the interpretation center a place for part of the coordination, logistics and management. The future interpretation center on this historical spatial and monumental "buckle", with its discreet and harmonious adaptation project as well as potential contents, is at this moment an exceptional example of functional intervention in the fully conservation-protected zone of the site, primarily in terms of its preservation, presentation and functionalization.
This project creates new spaces full of potential for the enrichment of the cultural and social life of Milna, spaces that offer the possibility of recording and representing the history of the development of maritime activities, culture and life in this locality. The implementation of the project creates conditions for the representation of the maritime heritage of the municipality of Milna with a special emphasis on fishing and shipbuilding, as well as the historical significance of the vessel, which, above all, had an economic value by enabling the transport of fish, olive oil and wine, and the generation of income from the sea through fishing, transport or shipbuilding.
Upon joining the European Union, the Republic of Croatia had to quickly and thoroughly standardize laws and regulations related to the fishing industry, nautical tourism and shipbuilding. In that process, there was no time to think about the systematic valorization and branding of Croatian tangible and intangible heritage based on fishing, small-scale shipbuilding, mariculture and life by the sea and at sea. This project seeks to make up for what was missed – to valorize the tangible and intangible local heritage of the Milna municipality, and in the thematic area that is the focus of the competition in question.
