UNVEILING OF THE STATUE OF THE MILNAR FISHERMAN

A very significant event occurred back in 1936, and is described in words carved on a stone slab of the shape of our island of Brač in the Blaca bay. These words: “IN THIS WAVE AT THE 50TH AGE, THE FISHERMAN FROM MILNAR, LUKA POKLEPOVIĆ, WITH HIS FAMILY, CAUGHT A LITJON TRATON WITH TWO LIGHT STONES OF MINĆUNIH”.

These words tell us how important it is when talking about Milna to remember the fishing history of Milna. From the period between the 17th and 19th centuries when Milna was the most developed and busiest port on Brač. Many Milna residents were sailors, shipowners, shipbuilders, but also fishermen. In 1911, there were 120 fishing boats on Brač, of which 43 were in Milna alone, on which 180 Milna fishermen fished. The majority of the ships that were in the maritime economy in 1888 were built in Milna shipyards, 24 of them. We must remember the Canary Islands where our mothers, fathers, grandparents and great-grandparents worked.

It is precisely because of all this that we are proud of the Thematic Trail project, part of which is the renovated old lantern now placed on the catamaran dock, the cave in the Vlaška Bay as an ancient shelter for fishermen, and finally the statue of a fisherman, as a monument and reminder of the Milna fishermen and the fishing industry that has fed and raised generations of both Milna and Brač residents.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in this project, especially our Brač sculptor Đani Martinić, who put a lot of effort into creating a statue that exudes reality.
